Typing speed benchmark

What is a good WPM for a typing test?

A good WPM depends on the test, your experience and your accuracy. The most useful benchmark is one that helps you improve without encouraging careless typing.

Quick answer: aim for accuracy first.

WPM means words per minute. In most typing tests, a "word" is calculated as five characters. A score around 40 WPM is a useful general baseline for everyday computer use, while consistent practice can move many typists higher. But an impressive WPM with low accuracy is less useful than a slightly slower, reliable result.

Under 30 WPM

Focus on key familiarity, posture and looking at the screen.

40–60 WPM

A solid everyday range. Improve rhythm and reduce repeated errors.

60+ WPM

Strong speed. Keep accuracy high and use harder texts for a fair test.

Why typing accuracy matters.

A typing speed test only tells part of the story. If you need to correct many errors, your usable speed falls. Try to keep accuracy close to or above 95%, especially while you are building touch typing habits. The Monkey Typing result screen shows both WPM and accuracy so you can judge them together.

How to improve your WPM.

  1. Use short typing practice sessions several times a week.
  2. Learn the home row with the 10 finger typing guide.
  3. Slow down slightly when errors repeat, then rebuild speed with cleaner keystrokes.
